My wife recently observed that supermarket shelves looked like locusts had been through them. On the same day one of my executive coaching clients noted that the current crisis is bringing out the best and the worst in people.
This reminded me of a management theory of one of my former colleagues at Macquarie Business School, Gayle Avery. She and her co –author Harald Bergsteiner researched organisational cultures and leadership, summarising them as either Honeybee or Locust.
As you might expect, Honeybee organisations build sustainable, collaborative ecosystems; while Locusts consume everything in their path. We’re seeing examples of both cultures right now. Social and economic. Individual and business. Some giving, some taking. Some helping, some seeking advantage. Some creating, some consuming.
As we (along with the Planet) take a forced deep breath, I wonder how many will take the opportunity to reflect and choose a different approach?
Anyone for Honey?
